I think we need to get radical with the shape of our writing, to mix genres and just generally become more daring. We have a complex experience, and our styles and forms should express it. We need to have serious conversations with both heritages, the American and the Arab. We need to rewrite both myths, but first we have to know both with deep and sustained familiarity.
